The pre-summer checklist
Work through this in September or October and summer is far quieter.
- Book a general pest treatment covering cockroaches, spiders and ants before activity peaks.
- Clear gutters and fix leaks — standing water breeds mosquitoes in as little as seven days.
- Empty or refresh pot plant saucers, buckets, tarps and unused pools weekly.
- De-web eaves, pergolas and outdoor furniture, and check under seating for redbacks.
- Move mulch, firewood and compost away from external walls.
- Check eaves and roof voids for early wasp nests — a nest treated in November is trivial compared to a mature nest in January.
- Fit or repair door seals and flyscreens before the doors start staying open.
Storm season brings its own spike
Heavy summer rain floods ground nests and drives ants, cockroaches and wandering spiders indoors, and standing water sets off a mosquito hatch about a week later. If you notice a sudden surge two or three days after a storm, that is why — and it is the point at which a residual barrier treatment earns its keep.
